Thirteenth Tale
Any books similar to "The House at Riverton", "The Forgotten Garden" and "The Thirteenth Tale"?
I read those 3 a while ago and liked them very much so i'm looking for something similar in the style of barried family secrets, tragedies, switching names and positions, someone in present time digging in the (usually ugly) past etc..those mystery types of books, usually set in old mansions, gothic fiction style more or less.I've read some of the old ones though, like Jane Eyre,Rebecca etc so i'm now looking for something contemporary like the 3 montioned above.
Any suggestions please..?
Cheers
p.s I've looked up some of the sites who are supposed to find similar books but it didn't work.I found most of the suggestions to have nothing in common (other than a murder if lucky)
Many of the books written by Sue Grafton, about her protagonist Kinsey Millhone, lead right into 'digging' into way-past events that come up and out through investigation of a variety of crimes. http://www.suegrafton.com Contemporary.
I put 'gothic crime novel' in http://www.amazon.com and see hundreds come up. Specified 'romance' as well and there are about 15 of those.
One classic I know is "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley, if you've yet to read it.
[I include it only because you didn't. Is not contemporary.]
Other titles seen that got good reviews at Amazon are:
"Where the Woodbine Twines" by Sherry Austin
Lots of books by B.J. Conner, like: "Shades of Grey: A Gaslight Gothic Mystery"
Tried to make link to Conner, as this author writes a lot, but no go, no way.
I'm sure you'll get many titles here. Luck in finding what you seek.
ADD: Both links are safe. You may want to do as I did at Amazon.
2nd ADD: Recall now "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" as fitting and contemporary.
Can't recall author's name, but it can be found at Amazon, library, bookstore.
