Is this what I saw fact or fiction?
I watched an old Sherlock Holmes movie called The Spider Woman starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. He mention a spider called "Larcosa Carnivera" or "Larcasa Carnivera." I'm not sure of the spelling. Anyways he said its bite was so painful it could drive a human to suicide. Does this spider really exist or was this made up??
The spider is called Lycosa Carnivora and exists. It is known in Italy as "la tarantella," and is the origin of the dance of the same name. I am not sure if it is from the town Taranto or from the spider but in French, we say "danser la tarantelle" for a person who is frenetically shaking. This is what the bite of that spider is supposed to do but ... drive to suicide ... perhaps, in extreme cases.
