Why Are There So Few Good Books?
It seems the entire bestseller list these days is filled with sugary self-help books (see Stephen Covey) or really horrible trash-pop novels (see Dan Brown, Stephenie Meyer, "Confessions of a Shopaholic", etc.)
Where have all the good writers gone? The last truly "good" book I've read that was recently published was "Beloved" by Toni Morrison.
@xstaywithyou : Believe me, I'm trying, but it seems so pointless these days. Even if it DID get published, what's it going to matter when sparkly vamps and swarthy treasure-seekers will outshine you?
@Lyra: Did I ever tell you how awesome you are? You're awesome ;D
@Bill W.: I'm not worried about being outshined: that was bad word choice. It's just disheartening to think that what one does, pours one's life into, will never be appreciated.
@xstickwithyou: yes, y-mail me sometime
Books have become more about success and mindless entertainment over the years. It's just society in general. I guess it's what's modern. It's a shame, but it's true.
I mean, compare Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, published in the 70s, with Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Interview has so many more morals and truths to it than the unrealistic book-that-doesn't-make-you-think by Meyer. But Rice is so ridiculously overshadowed by Meyer, all because of a god-like vampire named Edward Cullen.
Edit: Oh! Well, thank you
