Larry Mcmurtry

To anyone who has read LONESOME DOVE! Want to help me out?

I just finished reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry and now I need to write a 6ish page paper analyzing a single aspect of the novel. I am supposed to pick a thesis and back it up with quotes, examples, etc.

I loved the book but it is so long and there is so much that goes on in the book that I am having trouble picking just one thing to write about.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Maybe you could focus on what I thought was the main feature of the book: the long friendship between Gus and Call. You could write about the effects of their friendship on each other and how it affected other people as well. Were they good for each other? Did being friends with each other help them or hurt them? How did their friendship affect other people, like Call's son Newt? Would they have been better off not associating with one another or was it good that they were around each other for so long? Your examples of how you felt about their friendship would be easy to back up with quotes and other passages from the book since a lot of it deals with those two. It would, of course, also require you to present your own interpretations of various passages in the book.

I personally think that Gus was good for Call because Call had a tendency to be rather stiff and distant and Gus was more of a fun-loving guy whose jokes and general light-hearted air kept things loose and kept them human. Call was probably good for Gus too because he had a good hard work ethic (which happy-go-lucky Gus might have been lacking a bit in) and ran a tight, smart business with Gus. Both were very loyal people, especially with each other, and each knew that they could rely on the other to be loyal to the end.
