Help completing a book of Dickens?
I read many novels of Charles Dickens as David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations form abridged. I loved these stories. Recently I bought "Bleak House" in integral form and found that not only the book was a bore, but it was too difficult and time consuming for me to read. Advice on how to make it interesting to read?
First, I see nothing in an abridged edition. The authors intend to count every word in a story, it is not someone else to determine what words are not really important enough for the reader. That said, "Bleak House" is quite an undertaking. You may know his first appearance as a series (20 slices). It was an epic masterpiece in which he skewers Dickens in Victorian England from top to bottom. The language and style are typical of his other books, but since you read this short, you're used to something different. History is involved and has a multitude of plots, subplots and a multitude of major and minor characters. I had to read in school and actually used to keep records straight. I must say that it is a business, not a book we read today for the sake of it. Still though, it is a important book. And if you're a fan of Dickens, you owe it to yourself to read it. I think in the end, you will not regret it. I found useful at long to remember how difficult it was for Dickens was to put the stories together and keep all the lines. It's pretty incredible. What I am suggesting, is that you agree to read slowly over a long period of time. You can also try to read it aloud to get a better idea to the rhythm of words. I know it's difficult to read. Stick with it. You will not regret it.
