How to improve reading speed and comprehension at the same time?
I'm studying for a standardized test and the verbal part, there are about 6-7 points followed by 5-7 questions. My problem is timing and understanding. I usually finish in 6 minutes reading and understanding the main idea about 70%. How can I improve my reading speed so I can finish reading in 4 minutes and still understand the idea Main? What should I do as a practice? Just keep reading magazines and books? Thank you
This is difficult and may require some practice. Say the passage is about arthritis. The first paragraph say that arthritis is an inflammation of the joints, affecting children and adults in its various forms, with more exposure to this subject. This is the most important part to play. So you're looking for young, old, and various forms of arthritis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis - the sentence will explain how it is diagnosed in children, but seeing the keywords - "minor" and "arthritis" - You know immediately that this is the part involving children. Advanced degenerative arthritis - this is where it is generally Age-related and bone deterioration. Seeing these keywords, you know you're dealing with things that are not children and caused by age. When you go to answer questions 7.5, if you still have the paper in front of you, simply by identifying the keywords, you can probably remember where the exact description of it was made in the text and go back and look more closely, looking for those keywords, and take a little time for questions and not necessarily in-depth reading. Try a short segment and see. Read the first paragraph carefully, find all keywords expressed or implied by this first paragraph and then discuss the issues and see if you can go back and identify the exact location you saw them.
