How does F. Scott Fitzgerald use the character jay gatsby in the Great Gatsby?
i need to do a final project in my english class about The Great Gatsby and i need to show how F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby to show the theme of the novel.
p.s. i need to put a picture of someone who can represent Gatsby, but they cant be from the movie, i was thinking about using Don Corleone from the God Father but i'm not sure.
the character of Jay Gatsby is used in the novel to represent the American Dream, which is one of the key themes of the novel.
Gatsby's character is different from the other characters in the novel. Whilst Tom and Daisy, and all the other minor characters represent the downfall of the american dream, the barriers given by money and class, and between races and genders (which can be seen by the differences between east and west egg, which represent east and west in the US), Gatsby is different.
Gatsby is seen by Nick as "gorgeous". he has a dream to live for and a love to die for, a love for Daisy which is impossible to understand. We discover from nick that Gatsby gave up all his hopes and ambitions when he fell in love with Daisy: she became everything to him.
In spite of his criminal dealings, Gatsby has a heroic quality of innocence which we cannot help but admire.
