Where does Gandalf take Pippin in Return of the King and is it actually a real place?

Gandalf takes Pippin to Minas Tirith, in Gondor. It's not a real place; it only looks that great in Middle-Earth...for the movie, sets and miniatures were used to depict the city, there was no actual monument.
