Mary Roach
Who are the five funniest humour writers around? ?
I love Jeremy Clarkson and Mary Roach, but I need to explore more humour writing (as I'm a humour writer myself). I need some inspiration!
Mary Roach is a good choice; you don't normally see her in lists of humor writers, but she should count.
I presume you know the famous humor writers, alive and dead, such as Woody Allen and S.J. Perelman, James Thurber, etc.
I would recommend two fiction writers of different sensibilities. Both are very funny, and should inspire:
George Saunders (stories)
Lisa Lutz (novels)
among the dead, I'd recommend Donald Barthelme if you haven't read him. And Hunter Thompson (non-fiction).
Also I was moved the other day to listen to an old Firesign Theater piece while I was walking the dog. (Their private eye parody, Nick Danger.) If you haven't heard them, they are quite funny, though they write for performance more than the page.
