How is life after marrying a tunisian?
I am Romanian, and I have tunisian boyfriend. we r planning to get married.. but..he wants me to go n live in Tunisia with him . Does anyone did d same? married a tunisian n moved there? how is life there after marriage? any problems with his family? coz i know most of tunisian families r reluctant to foreign girls marrying their sons... i look forward for some answers or more info about this.. thanks
I am an American who is married to a Tunisian. We have three children and I am currently pregnant with our fourth, and I have been living in Tunisia 7+ years.
My husband and I are very fortunate because we have a good marriage and a happy life together. There are of course people who have problems. Any time there is a relationship between people of different cultures/societies/backgrounds/religions/languages it means that there will need to be more work on the relationship. This is due to overcoming the differences. You have to truly communicate with one another and understand not only what the other is saying, but what they mean (a LOT can get misunderstood - especially in the early years).
Family is very important here in Tunisia. Everyone in the family looks out for and helps one another - even after they become of age, get married and move out. My husbands family accepted me as a daughter and treated me as such from the beginning. We have our disagreements from time to time, but so do people in any family in any part of the world. I know of other foreigners marrying Tunisians, and it has never been a problem - even when the son moved away to live in the country of his wife.
From my own personal experience, and what I have seen of others, Tunisians are like any other family unit - some are good, some need some work - but in the end they all have a lot of love to give.
It did take some time for me to adjust to life here, as it is very different than the US, but once I did, I fell in love with it! Everyone is so nice, warm, and hospitable. Instead of raising my children pretty much on my own, I have the help of the whole family at my disposal anytime I need it. They all love and treat my kids as their own and help me as well. The family is really a blessing for me and one of the best things I love about living here.
My advice to you is to make sure that you know what you are getting into. Visit, meet your boyfriend family and friends, and see how he acts towards them, and towards you when he is around them. Have realistic expectations about him, what Tunisia is like to live in, and what your life together will be like, or you'll be unhappy from the start. Make sure that you know all the important things about your boyfriend, what he wants out of life, what his hopes and dreams are, where he sees himself in the future, etc - be sure that you are both on the same page about important things (children, how to raise them, finances, where you will live the rest of your lives, etc) so that your marriage has the best possibility of success.
