Did Edgar Cayce Ever Make Bad Predictions?
All I ever hear is how many hits Edgar Cayce had. Did he ever have any misses?
There are some very clear misses... for example, he predicted that Atlantis would rise again in 1968 or 1969. He predicted that Armageddon would come in 1999, and that China would become the new "cradle of Christianity." Needless to say, this hasn't happened yet, in 2010.
He also said (on many, many occasions) that even he "...could not accurately predict future events because human free will can alter and change the future." Cayce's own words state that a prophecy is only given as a warning for things to come, and never as an actual prediction.
On the flip side, his predictions were often cleverly-worded, giving a vague or multiple interpretation possible. But the most striking prophecies are those which are clearly worded, and which come to pass with more or less precision as it was written.
Of Edgar Cayce's predictions, perhaps 40% were solidly correct, while the remainder were either vague, multiple-intent, or simply wrong (the exact numbers are a point of debate). This is an example of what is called "confirmation bias" among skeptics, meaning that only the "hits" are recorded, while the "misses" go awry. One must be careful to weigh both sides, rather than focusing only on the "hits" or the "misses". Some of Cayce's work is nothing short of astounding, but a lot of it is really baloney (I would go out on a limb and say "most of it" at the risk of offending the true-believers).
Few people really achieved the level of accuracy that Cayce did, and the work taken as a whole (both hits and misses) is certainly extraordinary. In my own life, I'm lucky to be correct 25% of the time, and yet Cayce is 60% above that. That is significant, though it's only one person.
Bottom line: don't put too much credence into predicting the future. Nobody has a direct line to every future event. Few people can even say that Nostradamus is more than about 60% accurate, with any degree of mathematical certainty (judging by the past)--and Nostradamus is by far the more prolific, compared to Cayce. And even then, some of what was said is a bit of a stretch.
This isn't to say it can't be done, or that I don't myself believe, but one has to take the whole picture in before it becomes obvious that nothing in the future is certain.
