Charlotte Bronte
Who owns the rights to Charlotte Bronte novels?
I'm particularly interested in her novel 'Shirley' as I would like to adapt it for the screen.
Thanks for those answers. I think Jane Austen's 'estate' still retains rights to her books (I could be wrong), and I'm wondering if the same thing applies to Charlotte Bronte.
Because its been over 70 years since she wrote them, they have fallen outside copyright laws into the public domain. This means you can "plaugerize" anything you want from her works and make a profit off it.
The philosophical perspective of this is that is has had the time to become so ingrained in our culture that no single person or group can claim sole access to use it to create items of cultural value.
70 years is the standard in the western world for which an author can claim sole ownership of their works
