How come there's not a lot of transgender children's books?
Okay, reason for asking: I used to draw a lot of books as a little kid and give them to my older relatives, before and after I learned to read. I decided to come out to my dad by drawing a little book for him. Then I trekked around online for some ideas...
All I found was a "10, 000 Dresses". Says it's the only children's book with an openly transgender main character... how come? I find that weird.
Well really at that age there aren't a lot of books that cover sexuality in general. Children have not developed enough emotionally or physically to understand these concepts. You don't see books for 6 years olds that say it's ok to have a boyfriend/girlfriend either.
You'll find a bit more coming out about gay parents, but the difference is is that this is not a choice children are making. It's showing that any type of family home is acceptable. Rather than getting them to question their own sexuality or gender.
