Does anybody know any bad things about Harriet Beecher Stowe?
For English, we have to make a balloon debate and I find not many bad things about Harriet Beecher Stowe. Help? Much appreciated.
I guess it depends how you see it. A of his most famous "Uncle Toms Cabin" attacked the cruelty of slavery. Obviously, most of us today would see that as a very positive move. But if you lived in a state of slavery at the time, you could see his movement as an attack direct you and your state. In fact, many at that time did see his writings as offensive to the south. Entire books have been written trying to discredit his accusations of slavery such as, "Cabin Aunt Phyllis. This book points out that Stowe could not possibly know that slavery was in fact so horrible because through his research, Stowe interviewed only a handful of slave owners. Who in the South, was not sufficient enough evidence for his claim to the negative effects of slavery. Think of it as if your beliefs, you are so dear to your heart and raised to believe were suddenly imposed by someone who believed in something totally different and has held these beliefs as expensive as those you hold yours. Not only for his writings, but because she believed in this woman had a huge impact on the abolition of slavery.
